Cytarabine is used alone or together in combination with other approved anticancer drugs to treat acute non-lymphocytic leukemia of adults and children. It is also quite useful in the management of acute lymphocytic leukemia and the blast phase of chronic myelocytic leukemia. It is also helpful in the prophylaxis and treatment of meningeal leukemia.

What is the mechanism of action of Cytarabine injection?

Cytarabine has a cytotoxic effect on a wide variety of proliferating mammalian cells. It blocks a wide variety of proliferating mammalian cells and causes the damage of chromosome. This blocks the progression of cells and kills the cells undergoing DNA synthesis.

What are the contraindications of Cytarabine injection?

  • Don't use Cytarabine injection, if you're hypersensitive to this medicine.
  • If you are a pregnant lady then don't use this medicine.
  • If your blood cell count is very low due to some cause other than cancer then avoid using this medicine.
  • If you are suffering from encephalopathy after radiation treatment or treatment with another anticancer medicine then avoid using this medicine.

What are the drug interactions of Cytarabine injection?

There are some medicines show interactions with Cytarabine injection such as Digoxin, Beta-Acetyldigoxin, Gentamicin, and 5-Fl Uorocytosine.

What are the undesired effects of Cytarabine injection?

Use of Cytarabine injection can produce some undesired effects such as Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, and pain, swelling or redness at the injection site, severe tummy pain, and loss of vision.

How to administer Cytarabine injection?

Cytarabine injection is administered through subcutaneous or intravenous route. For the treatment of acute non-lymphocytic leukemia, the Cytarabine injection used in combination with other anti-cancer drugs is 100 mg/m2/day by continuous IV infusion for 1 to 7 days or100 mg/m2 IV every 12 hours for 1 to 7 days. For the treatment of Meningeal Leukemia, Cytarabine injection is used in doses ranging from 5 mg/m2 to 75 mg/m2 of body surface area through intrathecal route and the frequency of administration varied from once a day for 4 days to once every 4 days.
