What is Combigan eye drop? What is the indication of Combigan eye drop?

Combigan eye drop is used in the management of open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Combigan eye drop contains a combination of two generic medicines called Brimonidine and Timolol. This eye drop is used in lowering the intraocular pressure inside the glaucomatous eyes and prevents the damage of optic nerves.


What is the way of working of Combigan eye drop?

Combigan eye drop is made of two medicines Brimonidine and Timolol. Brimonidine is an alpha agonist that acts allowing better fluid drainage from within the eyeball and reduces the amount of aqueous humor inside the eyeball. Timolol is a beta-blocker that works by decreasing the amount of fluid formed in the eye.


What are the contraindications of Combigan eye drop?

The use of Combigan eye drop should be prohibited under certain medical conditions such as Bronchial asthma, a history of bronchial asthma, severe chronic obstructive, pulmonary disease, Sinus bradycardia, atrioventricular block, cardiac failure and shock. It is not recommended for infant or neonates under 2 years of age.


What the possible drug interaction of Combigan eye drop?

Some medicine when used along with Combigan eye drop, then they can interact with Combigan eye drop and may produce undesired effects. The medicine which shows the interactions with Combigan eye drop such as Phenelzine, Tranylcypromine ,  Isocarboxazid, Amitriptyline, Imipramine, Mianserin, Atenolol, Amiodarone, Nifedipine, Verapamil, Diltiazem And Digoxin.


How can you administer Combigan eye drop in a proper way?

Combigan eye drop contains 2 mg/ml Brimonidine and 5 mg/ml Timolol. To apply this eye drop, you have to tilt your head back and pull your lower eyelid to create a small pouch. Hold the container of the eye drop and instill one drop in the affected eye, then close your eyes for at least 2 to 3 minutes. Combigan eye drop should be used two times in a day and there should be a gap of 12 hours between the two dosages. You have to wait for at least 10 minutes before using any other eye drops


What are the side effects a patient can encounter while using Combigan eye drop?

A person can encounter with some of the side effects of Combigan eye drop such as red eye, burning sensation in the eye, Inflammation of the eyelids, stinging, itching, irritation, dryness, pain in the eye, insomnia, headache, dry mouth, fatigue, and sleepiness.


Warning!!!

  • You should not touch the tip of eye drop container in order to avoid contamination of this eye drop.
  • It may cause blurred vision, so drive a vehicle or operate any machinery while using this medicine.
  • If you are using contact lenses then remove them before the application of this eye drop.
  • If you have allergic reactions with Brimonidine or Timolol, then avoid using this eye drop.
